Upholstered Window Cornice (Pelmet)

Just preparing to reveal my sons bedroom, One more project after this and I will be able to reveal his room. This is another project which I did during the first year into this house. Since it is a old project, I don't have the during or before pictures, sorry about that.

After painting the room light blue, I was looking for bringing more color into the room. My sons room is pretty bright, well lit because of two windows, one each on each wall. As soon as we enter, eyes are kind of drawn towards the windows. So decided to deck up the window with the upholstered cornice (also known as pelmet).

This is how it looks from the door today. You can read all about the Desk makeover here

Materials

Wood for the box ( I got it cut for the size at the Homedepot )
Batting Material (Got it from Joann's with 40% coupon)
Fabric (Got it from Joann's with 40% coupon)
Nails and Hammer
Staple Gun
wood Glue

- I made the box  as shown in below picture by gluing the sides first and then attaching with the nails.
This is not the actual picture. Its just to show how it looked before the batting and fabric

- wrap as you are wrapping gift with the batting material and secure it with the staples.
- repeating the wrapping with the fabric. Make sure there is no wrinkle and secure it with the staples.
- Secure the cornice to the wall using L Brackets.

Stand back and enjoy the fabric covered cornice.

Thanks for stopping by and have a wonderful week ahead!!

Desk Makeover : From dingy and dull to bright and beautiful

How are you all good people, thanks for stopping by!!

My son kept asking us for the white desk to match rest of the furniture in his room for a long time now. I turned down hubby's offer to buy the desk online. While I was looking for the one I liked with the good bones on the Craigslist, son patiently waited. He was happy to use the entire family room as the homework area, LOL!

Our wait came to an end after few months, during this summer when I found one I liked within 10 miles from home. Picked it up happily for a whopping 15 bucks. This is how it looked before. Please excuse blurry picture from my iphone.

I started searching internet for inspiration and I came across following pottery barn desk Here. Son loved it, hubby gave me his usual disbelief look, daughter asked if I can paint one for her room too :) and my painting journey started.

This is from Pottery Barn website

My Version.

I started off right away with priming after proper cleaning. Desk sat in garage biting dust during the summer while I got busy with the summer activities. Few more projects came in between and the desk got a little sidelined. Here it is sitting pretty after two coats of primer (with lots of sanding before and after the primer) and after applying the beadboard wallpaper.

It is already looking so much better. I finally got to work on this during the long weekend last month. After couple of coats of paint, satin finish poly and a nose job for the drawers, here is the desk all pretty :)

Here is one comparing his old and new desk.

One more side view.

Its amazing what a can of paint can transform.
