Indian Inlay stenciled window cornice

This is my very first post on the blog.

Here is my version of Indian Inlay furniture. Intricate Inlay work always fascinated me. However I wasn’t keen in shelling out my hard earned money on the expensive ones available online. There was no way I would buy those as I am too thrifty. After looking for some inspiration on-line, I bought the Indian Inlay stencil by Kim Myles using 20% off coupon couple of months earlier from cutting edge stencils  http://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/indian-inlay-stencil-furniture.html

I didnt want to use the stencil on the table or the dresser. With a week long shut down at work, thanks giving week was the perfect time to bring my scattered ideas  into reality.

Without further ado lets see how this turned out!!! Here Comes the Wooden window cornice with Inlay work.

Here is how I did this project.

  • I used the hardwood plywood (left over from our closet building project) I already had at home, cut to size by friendly staff at Home Depot
  • Sanded, Pre conditioned and Stained using Minwax mahagony 225 stain . I was going for the rosewood look and very happy with the results after two coats.
  • Here comes the most interesting part, stenciling….. I stenciled and stenciled and stenciled using Martha Stewart multi surface Pearl Acrylic Paint for the next three days for few hours every day. Since this was my very first stenciling project, I was scared that I might ruin it with roller. It took little longer with the brush. I love this paint a lot, it has a nice shine to it.
  • In between partying, black Friday shopping, biking, hiking and loads of board gaming (Kids had the break too :) ) I was finally able to finish stenciling. Here is how it looked during the process and after

    • side support for the cornice
    • After all the stenciling, I sealed the entire cornice with the satin finish poly.
    • My handsome handyman aka my husband helped me with assembling. Mr R wasn’t too happy with just few screws holding up the whole structure (which is atleast 15 pounds), so we used few L brackets to hold it together
    • Using few D clips and heavy duty picture wire we were able to secure it to the wall

I am wayyyyy too happy with the way it turned out. It matches perfectly with the Indian Theme I am using in the entry room. I hope you enjoyed this reveal !!
